Mariel received her certificate to practice spiritual direction in 2022 through the North Carolina Institute for Spiritual Direction and Formation and is a member at Holy Infant Catholic Church in Durham, NC, where she currently resides.
She came to the practice of spiritual direction through the wisdom and social justice practices of Ignatian Spirituality as experienced at Canisius University in Buffalo, NY, and as a Jesuit Volunteer in Phoenix, AZ.
Mariel feels particularly called to accompany youth and young adults including those who have experienced grief and loss in their lives. However, she is deeply committed to walking with anyone who is seeking a deep personal connection with God, and who is looking to understand who God is for them at this time in their life journey. She best understands the Catholic experience, but is open to meeting with individuals from all faith communities, including those without defined faith communities or practices.
Mariel defines spiritual direction as the practice of listening another into wholeness in the view of God and in the view of their own spirit.
In her non-director life, Mariel graduated from Canisius University with a B.S in Animal Behavior, and received graduate degrees in Public Administration and Environmental Science from Arizona State University and Johns Hopkins University, respectively. She works as a finance manager at Conservation International, and enjoys spending time with her family and animals, as well as making art, writing poetry, reading, running, and baking.
